Wow, what a game! Bama even beat the 21 point spread on this one. I want to say first that rain does make for interesting football. The ball is slippery, the field is mush, it’s hard to see, it definitely ups the game for most players. However, it also results in injuries. Some of our guys had minor injuries during the game (A.J. McCarron, Christion Jones and Eddie Lacy) but they are okay. Mister Lacy even ran for 177 yards, had 3 touchdowns and was the player of the game. However, at the end of the game, the player from Missouri, Eric Waters, had to be carted off via stretcher. It was the very last play of the game and made the victory bittersweet. I was really worried for the guy, he was NOT moving. The good news is doctors say everything looks good and he shows no sign of concussion.
What I REALLY want to talk about, and what EVERYONE is talking about, and probably will be for some time to come is the hard hitting FLIP that LaMichael Fanning put on Mizzou player Russell Hansbrough. He literally picked him up and body slammed him HEAD FIRST on to the ground. We haven’t seen much of Fanning, he’s a red shirt Freshman, but he is also 6’7” and 298 pounds worth of mean muscle. Moves like that are what make the game of football so amazing to watch. Now of course the CBS announcers that I hate announcers said that Fanning could be suspended for a move like that and there was an unnecessary roughness call on the play. I suppose they are still waiting for him to be suspended from the team as they mentioned, but that hasn’t happened. I don’t necessarily think it was intentional, in weather like that, in the heat of the moment, who knows what you will do to get a man down. Maybe it was intentional, as most people say that it is some kind of wrestling move. However, watching this over and over again and viewing the picture about 298,965 times today, I am not so sure. It HAD to be a little painful for Fanning as well, he was bent over backwards, way farther than what anyone would do who does back bends or even back flips. He could have easily hurt his back, broke an ankle or any number of things.
We may never know! I would love to hear what you thought about the play and can’t wait to see if we ever get to hear what Fanning has to say about it and maybe we will, we will just have to wait and see!
