Great. Now I have to add another team to my “PAC 12 Teams To Hate” list. I’m not really sure what just happened, but there were some obvious issues. First of all, the offensive line didn’t seem to be helpin’ out Mariota at all. He was pressured all night and ultimately had a hard time finding open receivers. Add to this that dang Stanford rush defense, who shut down Barner most of the night- proving my prediction wrong. The Ducks’ defense played fairly well, holding Stanford to just 17 points, but the offense just could get it together. There’s no doubt the Ducks will have plenty to work on this week, as they prepare for the Civil War- a game that is shaping up to be a heated battle.
Now for some good news…
I know we are all in mourning, but after thinking things through for the past couple of hours, I’ve reached a conclusion: It ain’t over…yet. I know football commentators and Twitter are all a buzz about how the Ducks’ National Championship hopes are shattered, but I think they may be counting the chickens before they hatch. Perhaps I’m missing something, but after some serious analysis, I don’t think it’s all that far-fetched to think the Ducks could end up back in the BCS top two. The only problem is, it will take a few stars aligning just right.
In an attempt to spare you all the confusing details, the biggest “stars” to watch are USC vs. Notre Dame and UCLA vs.Stanford. If UCLA beats Stanford next week, the Ducks would end up back in the PAC 12 Championship- assuming they can beat OSU next weekend in Corvallis. If USC then beats Notre Dame, the BCS rankings would shake up again. There are a couple of other factors in play; specifically with Alabama, Georgia, K-State and Florida, but the path to the Natty IS still there. I don’t know about you, but after tonight, I need all the hope I can get, even if it depends on a few “Ifs”.
Chin up Duck fans, hurdle #1 may be knocked over, but the race isn’t over.
