ND Football: Golson Is Gone, Now What?

Let’s sit down and talk a bit. It’s been awhile and I”ve missed you. Top of the list? The up-in-the-air Quarterback situation in South Bend.  My opinions probably won’t be all that popular (big surprise huh?), but I guess because this is my blog, so I get to vent my unpopular opinions. You should comment your opinions on the situation; I’d love to hear them- the good, the bad and the ugly.

OK, so Golson has been suspended for the 2013 Fall Term due to “poor academic judgment”. Not sure exactly what that entails and I’m not going to speculate. At the end of the day, he is no longer enrolled which means he isn’t eligible to play for ND in the upcoming season. All this means we are left with IK (Tommy Rees)! I have criticized IK a lot in the past and most people probably wonder why I’m so hard on the kid. I just don’t think he’s ready quite yet. His mechanics aren’t all that great and he loves to throw those red zone INTs.  Grrrr! It’s not like Golson was Tom Brady or anything, but he was a better option than IK. Zaire and Hendrix are on the depth chart but I don’t know that they are ready from what I saw at the spring game. They have potential for sure, but I don’t see them ready to lead a team like ND come fall. I may be wrong and if I am I’ll cop to it, but that’s my opinion on them for now.

I’m a little frustrated that our backup QB is somebody, who I feel, just can’t get the job done the way it needs to be done. Again, if I’m wrong I’ll cop to it, but for now that’s my story and I’m sticking to it. Golson could have just as easily gotten hurt or kicked out of school (seriously so weird), but because Kiel transferred, unfortunately our best chance at QB is pretty mediocre. There is talk that ND is interested in former OK State QB Wes Lunt and that may be an option, but I guess we’ll have to see.

All of this doesn’t change the fact that I’m ridiculously excited for ND’s upcoming season. No matter what, I bleed blue and gold.

Kickoff is August 31 vs. Temple! That’s 81 days Ladies! Go Irish!!

  1. OH NO…This is like the WORST POSSIBLE THING that could happen to a team…(short of 3 or 4 of your players getting arrested for beating people up and robbing them). ANYWHO, I digress. This is like a seriously big deal. And if the main reason that you feel this way is because he is prone to throwing INTs in the red zone, then I feel like your opinion is validated. I saw a lot of INTs thrown by the QBs in our Spring Game as well, old and new and that makes me VERY NERVOUS. Will be interesting to see if this guy can step up to the plate.

    • I’m hoping he can. He’ll need to grow a lot and develop his skills. What is going on with our teams Tracie?!? Gah, I’m hoping they get their stuff together.

Thumbs down on this blog !!! ahaha …Seriously though, if you take away a couple of Red Zone interceptions Tommy looked really good last year in relief ! Plus Tommy is a senior this year, fully mature and wanting to leave his mark on ND. Zaire and Hendrix will be good “mix it up” options.
You should re-watch the BYU game ,he was phenomenal !! ..Rees is calm, a leader, confident and knowledgeable, not a strong arm but accurate in tight spaces! ……….And that’s MY blog! ahaha

    • In relief though, not the main QB. He’s too inconsistent and that worries me. We need consistency and someone who can lead the team in a positive and successful direction. But you are entitled to your opinion 🙂 I did say mine wouldn’t be very popular 😉
