Jet Lag is No Obstacle for Oregon

It turns out even a little jet lag can’t slow down the Ducks. I have to admit I was a little surprised myself. The Ducks will make the 3,000 mile trip back to Eugene with another “W” in the books (59-10), but this game means a whole lot more. Playing on a national stage on the EAST COAST gave the Ducks a whole new audience- one that matters in NCAA Football. Many of the poll voters live on the East coast and do not always have such an in-your-face opportunity to watch the Oregon Ducks in action. Although few would admit it, this game likely left a big imprint on those voters’ minds-even if they tuck it away for a while.

There’s no doubt the “Hoos” have some talented playmakers. They just weren’t equipped to keep up with the up-tempo, spread the Ducks bring each and every time. The Ducks may be flashy, but they have talent to go along with all that flash, make no mistake. For the first time, I actually googled “have 2 players from the same team gone to NY for Heisman Ceremony”. The answer is “yes” by the way. Several times. I’m not going to explain that search because I don’t want to jinx anything, but I’m sure you all know what I was thinking. I know, I know, I’m getting WAY ahead of myself, but one can dream right?

So, what did we learn?

The Offense is Even Faster.
When Chip Kelly left to Philadelphia, many wondered if the Ducks would lose some of that up-tempo flavor. All the worry was clearly for nothing.

Mariota and DAT are making very strong Heisman cases.

OK, maybe I’m just biased, but it’s very hard to watch each of these guys and not give credit where credit is due. You could just see the Virginia players and crowd reacting to DAT in total disbelief, one touchdown after another. Just when I think a team may key in on him, he finds a way to sneak through- definitely earning his nickname, “Black Momba”.
And then there’s Mariota. Are you kidding me?? I know his humble self isn’t worried about that hype, calling it “outside noise”, but he still deserves to be part of the discussion. He’s a complete package and even East Coast bias can only go so far.

Thomas Tyner is the real deal.

Sure, he had only had to go 3 yards for the first touchdown and he had a lot of help for the O-line for the second, but scoring on his first two touches of collegiate play isn’t too shabby. This kid’s going to be a star.

The Ducks need to clean up the penalties.

It’s still early in the season and mistakes are to be expected, but penalties can cost a game. It’s time to watch film and clean up. Yes, I’m reaching here. I know. I’ve been spending a lot of time around the coaches and well, there’s always something to work on.
