UTSA; aka Dirty Birds!

Is UTSA’s next rival the UTEP Miners?

Many think so. UTEP currently has an I-10 rivalry with New Mexico State, but the similarities with the Roadrunners make this match-up interesting: both schools are part of the University of Texas system, and therefore share the UT orange (not burnt orange- thank God!).

There has been a lot of trash talk this week between these I-10 (potential) rivals, including the cute fact that UTSA used borrowed UTEP practice jerseys during their inaugural season – it has definitely gotten ugly!!

Trash talk aside, this game is going to boil down to whether the Runner offense, lead by QB Eric Soza, is clicking or not. Last week, the Arizona defense stifled the typically mechanistic qualities of Soza & Co. However, the Miner defense doesn’t come close to the talent level of the Wildcats. Furthermore, the Runner defense has had two weeks of very tough competition and should find themselves one step ahead of the less talented Miner offense.

The experts in Vegas opened the line at -1 for the Miners. However, the line has swung towards favoring the Roadrunners slightly, in a game away from the Alamodome. Look for UTSA to move the ball at will with their prolific short-range passing attack, and hopefully with a dose of running game – UTEP has proven to be completely inept at stopping the run so far this year. Bottom line is the Roadrunners should come away with their first Conference USA win of the season, and we’ll be smoking brisket all day in preparation!!

About Laurie (43 Articles)
A true southern girl at heart, Laurie was raised to love football. Her years at Mississippi State really developed her passion for everything gameday: Getting primped and polished in über-cute outfits, tailgating with new and old friends, fans clanging cowbells with great exuberance while the Bulldogs play great football inside Davis Wade Stadium. Laurie is a huge fan of Coach Mullen, his wife, Megan, and the team he has built. Could this team have a Heisman candidate??… After moving to Texas and marrying a fellow football fan who graduated from UTSA, she was thrilled when UTSA announced its plan to build a football program. The Athletic Director, Mrs. Lynn Hickey, has done a phenomenal job and has a large fan following, including Laurie. Laurie has been a season ticket holder since the first season, and has loved watching the team grow. Laurie loves to be crafty at times. Hand-painted glasses for both teams fill her cabinets, team wreaths hang on her front door. Her blue and orange feathered sombrero makes it to every UTSA game, loud and proud. Laurie has a B.S. in Marketing, and a Minor in Apparel, Textiles, and Merchandising from Mississippi State University.
