Well, maybe “welcomes” isn’t the best word, since Morgantown is fairly notorious for being hostile to visiting teams. It’s just one more sportsmanlike service we offer, along with couch-burning, car-flipping, cup-throwing, and on rare occasions tearing down goalposts. While WVU is sitting at 3-3 for this season, we are 3-0 at home. So, if this pattern continues, we’ll upset #16 Texas Tech on Saturday. In fact, some sports sites have this game on Upset Alert. Honestly, I think they are being overly generous.
As much as I would love to see WVU pull out a win here, I’m just not going to get my hopes up. I know we’re still salty about that Baylor loss and would really like to prove something this weekend… but the truth is, our offense continues to struggle, special teams continues to make mistakes, and the defense can’t be expected to pick up all of that slack. In all fairness to my beloved Mountaineers, we are clearly in a rebuilding year and we have a tough schedule – Texas Tech will be the fourth undefeated, ranked team we’ve played this year. Holgorsen needs to settle on a quarterback (it won’t be Childress – he’s out for the rest of the season with a torn pectoral muscle), and let this offense get itself sorted. Maybe next year we’ll be having an entirely different conversation.
So, my advice to you, dear friends, is to hope for the best but prepare for the worst. Pick a fun Homecoming event to attend; eat, drink, and be merry; and don’t pay too much attention to the game.
In other news:
- WVU’s Athletic Director, Oliver Luck, has been named to the College Football Playoff selection committee. This committee will replace the BCS system we currently use, which pleases me beyond measure. I dream of living in a world where a non-SEC team has even the slightest chance of playing in the National Championship. The rumor is that Luck may be the next AD at Texas. His response to questions about this so far has been “I would prefer not to comment on that”. Which tells me we will have a new AD next year. But hey, at least he won’t be going out like RichRod did, you know sneaking away like a thief in the night right before a bowl game.
- Speaking of RichRod, apparently he regrets the way he left WVU. Well, you can stuff your sorries in a sack, mister!
Let’s Go………. Mountaineers!
