Rival Week: Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate

Seventy miles separate Georgia Tech and the University of Georgia, but the distance means nothing when it comes to this rivalry. The distaste for Georgia Tech is a tradition that the Bulldog faithful strongly uphold. Even though the constant smack talk occurs year round, it ramps up for this game. But after Aaron Murray’s season ending injury the hate escalated to a new high.

I am completely okay with exchanging harsh jokes and stabs at each institution. I have many friends who are Tech fans and students but come on, you don’t wish a season ending injury on anyone. It is just a new level of immaturity. If you want to track the back and forth banter on twitter, search the hashtag #UGAvsGT

The old fashioned hate between the two universities has been going on since 1892 and has cemented itself within their fight songs. Georgia Tech’s “I’m a Ramblin’ Wreck” included “To hell with Georgia”, while UGA’s “Glory, Glory” shifted its song in 1908 to include “To hell with Georgia Tech” when the Dawgs and Jackets face off.

It’s something serious when you put it in a song. Not just any song, but the university fight song.

Hudson Mason will be leading the Bulldogs in his first career start against the Yellow Jackets at Bobby Dodd in Atlanta. Georgia has won the past four years with last year resulting in a 42-10 victory.  The Dawgs lead the series 63 to  Tech’s 39, with five ties on the books.

I am hoping to see a great start for Mason and some good clean, old-fashioned hate. Make sure to keep up with all the rival nonsense on twitter. It is bound to be a great day.
