The first weekend of college football is just about here… finally! This Saturday in Starkville is quite a unique situation. MState is taking on the Southern Miss Golden Eagles from Hattiesburg. Even more exciting than opening the season with an in-state foe, is of course walking in to the brand new stadium! It will be an abundant feast for the eyes, no doubt. State wants this to be ‘their’ game. They want to dominate, and expect to do so. And why wouldn’t they?? State is SEC. USM is C-USA. State’s got the big boys, and plays the big boys. Everything surrounding the football program in Starkville is top notch and of the highest quality. Let us not forget however that Southern Miss is the team with a chip on their shoulder. They know that no one in Starkville thinks they can pull it off. These Eagles are ready to prove everyone wrong; ready and willing to take on anyone, anytime, anywhere–and it’s not an impossible feat, actually. Their program is rebuilding, the head coach is returning, and they are ready to start the season with a bang. (They have beat LSU, Florida State, and shut out Alabama, by the way.) This is where, historically, Mississippi State has gotten itself in trouble. They’ve taken on these ‘easy wins’ with so much confidence, that it backfires. The team doesn’t play as hard and strong as they know they can. They don’t block well enough, tackle hard enough, and prevent big plays. The Bulldogs absolutely have to keep their mind in the game, and play like it’s the championship game. Here’s a little history for you: MSU vs. USM in-state rivalry has been going on for almost 50 years. USM leads the series 14-12. These teams have not played in 23 years. See that 14-12 number?? Yep, They lead the series. Not MSU. According to the Vegas odds, State has a 30.5 spread, meaning, they are expected to win by that much. With Mullen and the coaching staff, and the team working as a true unit, theres NO WAY the Eagles will soar out of Starkville. With all the trash-talking between fans being put aside, this is a great game for Mississippians as a whole. The buzz and local coverage is getting more intense as it gets closer to Saturday. Lets’s ring those cowbells, and send those Eagles home with a headache, why don’t we?!
